Roland Clarke

Within the School, I teach a course on Electronic Circuit Design and supervise a number of projects for final-year BEng, MEng and MSc students.

My own research activities are focussed on high-frequency measurements, especially in the millimetre-wave and THz areas of the spectrum. Obtaining reliable measurements is of great importance to the industry, especially as devices that operate at these frequencies are being used for applications ranging from airport security to space exploration. Recent research projects have looked at ways to evaluate and improve the quality of high-frequency measurements, funded by the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) and I lead the University of Leeds' contribution to a metrology partnership with the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL). I am also a member of the IEEE, an international professional body.

I am particularly pleased if I can inspire students to consider high-frequency electronics as a potential career path. There are many employment opportunities for highly-skilled engineers in this area of electronics. A number of my former undergraduate students have progressed to further study (PhD) or are now enjoying a career in this field.
