Research and innovation

The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences is a new faculty, which brings together the faculties of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences from 1st August 2019.

Bragg Centre for Materials Research

The Bragg Centre for Materials Research will enable the discovery, creation, characterisation and exploitation of materials engineered at the atomic level.

The Centre acts as a focus for research across campus, bringing together the University’s strengths in III-V semiconductors, optoelectronics, and high frequency devices, crystallisation and materials chemistry, functional oxides and glasses, ferroelectric, magnetic and spintronic materials, bionanotechnology, soft condensed matter systems, and functional surfaces and corrosion.

Research Excellence Framework 2014

The results of the Research Excellence Framework 2014 sees all schools within the Faculty of Engineering achieving over 80% of research activity rated as either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

Our high research ratings enable us to continue to recruit the best research staff and students, invest in our facilities and continue to build links with industry and research partners in the UK and overseas.

Research degrees

We are interested in the brightest and the best students to join our research teams. We have a number of funded PhD projects and scholarships available across engineering and computing.

If you are interested in undertaking a four year integrated research degree we have places available in our Centres for Doctoral Training.
