Research and innovation

Founded in 1898, the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has over 100 years of research history, leading to outstanding impact from our research - including pioneering work on: switched-reluctance drives; microwave network analysers; filters and semiconductor devices; terahertz technology, including quantum cascade lasers; bio-sensors; and energy-efficient communications networks. 

We’re exceptionally proud that according to the Research Excellence Framework 2014, 100% of our research outputs are ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. We attract grants from UK Research Councils, government departments, the European Union and many industrial sources.

The School is home to a large community of committed and passionate research staff and students, accessing a range of facilities and working within dedicated research laboratories. 
 

Research degrees

We are interested in the brightest and the best students from anywhere in the world to join our research teams. 

We have a number of funded PhD projects and scholarship opportunities available across electronic and electrical engineering.

We have a strong track record of collaborations with academic institutions and major international electronics and communication companies around the world. We also work extensively with other schools across the University of Leeds, including Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Chemical and Process Engineering, Computing and Mechanical Engineering.
