Our reputation

We’re ranked 2nd in the UK for Civil Engineering in the Guardian university league tables 2019. We achieved 91% overall student satisfaction for civil engineering and 100% for architecture in the National Student Survey 2018.

Research-based degrees

We have an active research environment which enables us to offer a range of exciting courses taught by experts who are leaders in their fields. You’ll be directly engaged in research through substantial individual and team-based project work giving you access to our specialist facilities.

Industry-relevant courses

Our Industrial Advisory Committee and our academic partnership agreement with the Institution of Civil Engineering (ICE) ensure our courses are up-to-date with the modern practices and techniques that will enable you to succeed in industry upon graduation.

All of our courses are professionally accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, which provides a route to Chartered Engineer status in the UK.

The Architecture MEng, BEng course is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), for the purposes of entry on the UK Register of Architects.

Flexible degrees

Our courses share a common first year. This means you have the freedom to switch programmes up until the end of your second year. You also have the option of spending the third year of your MEng at one of our specially selected partner universities overseas, or extending your degree by taking an industrial placement year option.

Hands-on learning

Laboratory classes, project work and fieldwork allow you to gain hands-on experience, investigating and applying material from your lectures and tutorials to real-life work situations.

Rewarding careers

93% of our recent graduates are employed or in further study within six months of graduating (latest Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey - 2016/17).

Annabel Downing - MEng Architectural Engineering

The School of Civil Engineering has great facilities which have helped me to understand the lecture content. My favourite so far has been the concrete laboratory in second year, where we were able to design, mix and test concrete.
