Civil engineering is one of the most diverse professions available. As a civil engineer, you’ll become involved in a wide range of activities, including planning, designing, constructing, maintaining, improving and managing the physical environment around us. You may help design transport systems, undertake the treatment and restoration of contaminated sites, enhance the energy efficiency of buildings, or design and construct iconic structures.

We’re ranked 2nd in the UK for Civil Engineering in the Guardian university league tables 2020. We achieved 92% overall student satisfaction for civil engineering and 94% for architecture in the National Student Survey 2019.
We have an active research environment which enables us to offer a range of exciting courses taught by experts who are leaders in their fields. You’ll be directly engaged in research through substantial individual and team-based project work giving you access to our specialist facilities.
Our Industrial Advisory Committee and our academic partnership agreement with the Institution of Civil Engineering (ICE) ensure our courses are up-to-date with the modern practices and techniques that will enable you to succeed in industry upon graduation.
All of our courses are professionally accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, which provides a route to Chartered Engineer status in the UK.
The Architecture MEng, BEng course is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), for the purposes of entry on the UK Register of Architects.
Our courses share a common first year. This means you have the freedom to switch programmes up until the end of your second year. You also have the option of spending the third year of your MEng at one of our specially selected partner universities overseas, or extending your degree by taking an industrial placement year option.
Laboratory classes, project work and fieldwork allow you to gain hands-on experience, investigating and applying material from your lectures and tutorials to real-life work situations.
