Product design is an activity which defines and reflects society and culture, shaping our environment, facilitating daily life and providing a powerful medium for communication and expression. As a product designer you could work in a variety of areas, from manufacturers with in-house design departments to design consultancies.
All of our staff are experienced product designers or active researchers in disciplines related to product design, which means that you will benefit from up-to-date, cutting-edge learning and teaching. Our Industrial Advisory Committee also helps ensure our courses are up-to-date with the modern practices and techniques that will enable you to succeed in industry upon graduation.
Bridging the gap between arts and engineering
There is growing demand from industry for students who are both creative and technically literate. Our course brings together both design and engineering to produce skilled and creative designers who understand both aesthetics and technology. Our course is also jointly accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering Designers (iED).
You will have access to our very own product design studio, with PCs running a number of design packages, as well as our prototyping area and model-making facilities including forming, laser cutting, foam model sculpting, 3D printing and CNC routing.
You can choose to study either our three-year BSc course or our four-year integrated MDes course. You also have the option of extending your studies through the Study Abroad and industrial placement year options.
You’ll benefit from our integrated style of learning and teaching. Project work and design modules allow you to gain hands-on experience, investigating and applying material from your lectures and tutorials to real-life work situations.
More than 93% of our recent graduates have successfully secured a professional or managerial role within six months of graduating (latest Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey).
