You will study 180 credits in total during your Automotive Engineering MSc(Eng). A standard module is typically worth 15 credits and the professional project is worth 75 credits. These are the modules studied in 2017. If you are starting in September 2018, these will give you a flavour of the modules you are likely to study. All Modules are subject to change.
Professional project - 75 credits
You will undertake a professional project during the summer months.
Recent projects include:
• Coated lightweight brake rotors
• Designing, measuring and modelling of vehicle dynamics
• Thermo-mechanical analysis of disc brake for vehicle rollaway.
Automotive Chassis Engineering - 15 credits
Aspects of chassis systems and behaviour, including suspension and steering systems, chassis structures, and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).
Automotive Driveline Engineering - 15 credits
An overview of all the key elements of a driveline, with particular focus on the design of the key machine elements along with some novel applications.
Vehicle and Product Systems Design - 15 credits
This module aims to provide a solid understanding of the development and understanding of aerospace and aircraft and other vehicle or product systems and their design.
Vehicle Design and Analysis - 20 credits
Basic and more advanced concepts of vehicle performance, including ride, handling, aerodynamics and acceleration/deceleration behaviour.
Mechatronics and Robotics Applications - 15 credits
The integration of components such as actuators, mechanisms, mechanical structures, sensors and computer control/electronics into a unified form.
Surface Engineering - 15 credits
Surface engineering technologies for the control of wear, corrosion and fatigue of engineering components.
Engineering Computational Methods - 15 credits
The module introduces students to the basic computational methods used to solve engineering problems modelled by ordinary differential equations and parabolic or hyperbolic partial differential equations. They will also learn how to implement the learned methods in practice. Engineering simulation software packages rely on computational methods and a good understanding is crucial to knowledgeably use them.
Introduction to Tribology - 15 credits
A broad-based introduction to the interdisciplinary scientific discipline of tribology, covering how tribology impacts on the design and operation of mechanisms and the means adopted to lubricate them.
Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis - 15 credits
This module provides the basic theoretical and practical knowledge to allow a student to competently perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with commercial software packages used in industry.
