Mechanical engineers are involved in the design and manufacture of almost everything, and there are jobs for mechanical engineers in most areas of industry. As a mechanical engineer you could become involved in design, manufacture, research, development, management or marketing.

Research-based degrees

We have an active research environment which enables us to offer a range of exciting courses taught by experts who are leaders in their fields. You’ll be directly engaged in research through substantial individual and team-based project work – giving you access to our specialist facilities.  

Industry-relevant courses

Our Industrial Advisory Committee helps ensure our courses are up-to-date with the modern practices and techniques that will enable you to succeed in industry upon graduation. All of our courses are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Our Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering course is jointly accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), and our Product Design course is also jointly accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (iED).

Flexible degrees

Our courses share a common first two years. This means you have the freedom to switch courses up until the end of your second year. You also have the option of extending your studies through the study abroad and industrial placement year options

Hands-on learning

Laboratory classes, project work and fieldwork allow you to gain hands-on experience, investigating and applying material from your lectures and tutorials to real-life work situations.

98% of our recent graduates are employed or in further study within six months of graduating (latest Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey 2016/17).
