Over the past 15 years, the University of Leeds has built a reputation of being recognised as a leader in the field of nuclear science and engineering research.
Our expertise in chemical and process engineering has made the University one of the top institutions in the UK and Europe for engineering research on fuel cycles, and legacy waste processing.
The strength of the Nuclear Leeds team is a result of the multidisciplinary capability of our researchers, coming from eight academic disciplines from across the University campus, covering various research areas including:
- Decommissioning and decontamination
- Advanced fuel cycles
- Computational fluid dynamics
- Waste encapsulation
- Development of novel analytical/characterisation tools
- Environmental assessment
Our close working relationship with industry provides a firm basis for the relevance of our research. We have a long track record of research partnerships with companies and organisations within the UK’s civil nuclear industry.
Nuclear Leeds is committed to creating a sustainable capability in science and engineering disciplines required by the nuclear industry. We offer an undergraduate course in Chemical and Nuclear Engineering and funding for postgraduate research, with an aim to develop the next generation of leaders in the nuclear fission sector.
The University is currently investing over £1.25m into specialist laboratory facilities, including new uranics laboratories providing researchers at Leeds, and from across the UK, with wet and dry process engineering facilities and a rig hall, opening up new opportunities for work on the nuclear fuel cycle. The laboratory suite is scheduled to open in mid-2016.
