In situ isosurface compression

As data sizes scale to the exabyte range, disk speeds have failed to keep pace with computation, and long-dormant modes of visualisation are reviving. In situ visualisation seeks to resolve this dilemma by performing all or part of the visualisation on the same nodes as the computation, then using disk I/O intervals to perform visualisations for storage on disk, given the small size (MB-range) of each image in a visualisation. 

However, these visualisations are from a fixed viewpoint, limiting the ability to inspect large data visually. Previous work has shown that isosurfaces have complexity in the region of O(n^{0.6-0.8}). Thus, an isosurface of an exascale data set may involve terascale triangle counts. While still large, many techniques exist for compressing triangulated surfaces, and further techniques specialised to isosurfaces may also be possible.

This project will therefore explore the maximum compression ratios feasible in tera-scale data isosurfaces, with potential to extend to peta- or exa-scale data. 

Entry requirements

Applications are invited from candidates with a minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree (2:1), and/ or a Master's degree in a relevant subject. We also recognise relevant industrial and academic experience.
