What have you been doing since finishing your studies? What are you doing in terms of your career?
Since completing my masters in Chemical Engineering in June, I have travelled to South America before starting my career as a Chemical Engineer at an oil refinery.
What company are you working for, what is your role and what does it involve?
I am working for Essar Oil UK. My current role is as a Technologist on a hydro-treating unit. My role involves both day-to-day monitoring of the unit and the long-term reliability of it; it is my job to offer technical support for the operation of the unit to ensure it runs efficiently and safely whilst still producing a high quality product.
What experiences at Leeds do you think have particularly helped with your career/will help with your future career?
Completing my degree at the University provided me with a strong technical skill-set that I can apply to solve real-life problems. Being on the committee of a university sports team and undertaking group projects as part of my degree enabled me to develop skills such as leadership and team-work, as well as teaching me how to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, which is essential in industry.
Looking back, why did you choose to study your particular course and why did you choose the University of Leeds?
I chose Chemical Engineering because of the wide-range of industries the degree can be applied to. For example, oil and gas and pharmaceuticals. I decided to study at the University of Leeds as it was one of the top universities for the degree, as well as offering a good student experience in an amazing city.
What was the best aspect of the course/the University and why? Any highlights?
The best aspect of the course was the wide-range of modules on offer and the strong links with industry.
What would you say to students thinking about studying the same course at Leeds/thinking about the same career?
I'd say that Chemical Engineering is a solid degree as it offers a wide range of job opportunities, and that personally I enjoy working for an oil company due to the fast-paced nature of the industry and the constant need for innovative thinking.
