Professor Harvey Thompson

Profile

I have taught and led a range of Mechanical Engineering modules including Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Mechanics, Aerodynamics, Racecar Chassis Engineering, Computational and Experimental Methods and Microfluidics. I have previously been Director of Learning & Teaching and am currently Director of Research & Innovation within the School. My research focusses on Computational Fluid Dynamics and Design Optimisation for energy-efficient products and processes and current collaborators include Rolls Royce, Airbus, Parker Hannifin, Iceotope and Sandvik Coromant. I have graduated 18 PhD students and am currently supervising 12 PhD students. My recent Enterprise and Knowledge Transfer activities include: Invited lecturer on AIMCAL European Coating Schools on Industrial Coating and Drying; Development of Super Impactor Crankcase Ventilator for diesel droplet filtration with Parker Hannifin – winner of Grand Prix and Green Product of the Year prizes at the 2012 British Engineering Excellence Awards; 2013 Green Enterprise IT Award for Facility Product Deployment (with Iceotope Ltd).

Research interests

My current research is focussed on Computational Fluid Dynamics and Design Optimisation for energy-efficient products and processes. These include: air and liquid cooling technologies for electronics cooling and data centres; automotive droplet filtration systems for diesel engines.; energy efficient food manufacturing; multi-disciplinary Design Optimisation of aerospace engines

I collaborate with several other UK and international universities on funded projects, including Queen Mary and Imperial College London, Technische Univestität Munich, Technische Universiteit Delft and the Von Karman Institute, Brussels. Current industrial collaborators include Rolls Royce, Airbus, Procter & Gamble, Altair, Parker Hannifin, Iceotope, Sandvik Coromant and Onera Paris. I have received recent research funding from a variety of sources, including: the EU, the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the UK’s Department of Trade and Industry and direct industrial research funding from a number of companies.

I have graduated 18 PhD students and am currently supervising 12 PhD students.
