Dr Andrew Shires

Research interests

Andrew has over 19 years experience of work in the Aerospace industry working for QinetiQ and its predecessors in the field of aerodynamic design, research and development. As Capability Group Leader, Andrew was responsible for managing project delivery and keeping QinetiQ at the leading edge of wing design through the development of innovative tools and concepts, technical leadership and building good collaborative partnerships with Industry. He is a leading authority on wing design, flow control technologies, aerodynamic performance simulation and analysis, numerical design optimisation and wind tunnel test techniques. He has worked on a wide range of projects supporting the development of civil and military aircraft, racing cars, and wind turbines.

In January 2010 Andrew joined Cranfield University to work on the preliminary design of a novel 10MW offshore vertical axis wind turbine. As an MSc Course Director and Senior Lecturer within the Offshore Renewable Energy Group, his primary focus was the design, research and development of renewable energy devices, particularly vertical axis wind and tidal stream turbines, as well as wind turbine wake analysis and active and passive flow control technologies.

Andrew joined the University of Leeds in December 2013 as an Associate Professor of Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering.
