Why did you decide to study MEng Civil Engineering with Project Management at the University of Leeds?

I made the decision to study at the University of Leeds because the University of Leeds is listed as a Russell Group University and it is also one of the highly rated universities for Civil Engineering in the UK.

What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University and why?

With regards to my course the best aspect of studying here is the availability of resources/information available for me to me carry out my course work, projects and reports. The sporting life at the university is very vibrant, as diverse sports facilities (football pitches, rugby pitches, swimming pools, gyms etc.) are readily accessible to students who are interested.

Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed so far?

I have spent three years at Leeds so far, within these three years I have carried out a variety of projects. One of them was to design a scheme, which will reduce the risk of flooding on the Hebden Bridge, it involved extensive research as well as visiting the site and proposing a proper solution (use of underground drainage) to help curb the problem. This project was carried out in my first year.

In my second year we were asked to design a four-storey building for the purpose of an office, it involved extensive calculations to ensure the foundations, steels beam, concrete slabs, floors, and roof of the building all fall within the required limits in regard to the forces acting on them. This was a rather exciting project even if it was very time consuming.

I have only just completed my Design Project (Dissertation). The topic of this research was Health and Safety in the Nigerian Construction Industry. It involved carrying out research on the existing level of health and safety in the Nigerian Construction Industry, evaluating the effectiveness of health and safety in the Nigerian Construction Industry and suggesting an adequate solution to the problems identified in regard to health and safety. To acquire information for the purpose of this study, extensive research was carried out using sources such as journals, previous reports and journals. I also was in contact with a civil engineer who is presently employed in the Nigerian Construction Industry.

What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?

Leeds is a very diverse city with students from all over the world. Besides the quality education attained from the University, from my experience, studying at Leeds exposes you to a variety of different cultures. This helps in broadening the perspective with which the students think and approach certain challenges in Life.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I aspire to become a successful Construction Project Manager based in Nigeria. I also want to have a huge positive impact in regard to improving the level of health and safety in the Nigerian construction industry.

What Experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

The School of Civil Engineering have had several career days in which engineers from civil engineering companies come to the University and address the students and also answer any questions we have about working in the field, I for one found this very useful. Also, we have a module called employability which is all about preparing the students for life in the industry by giving us useful in formation about the requirements we will need to be successful engineers in the near future.

What would you say to students coming to do the same course?

Civil Engineering and Project Management is a very interesting course and anybody who is coming to study it here at Leeds should definitely be focused. Although it is very interesting, if one does not manage time and plan properly it can get very stressful and the one thing I can assure is no student wants to work under stressful conditions. Also the lecturers are always more than willing to help, so if one is experiencing any challenges never hesitate to meet them for assistance.
