Why did you decide to study a masters at the University of Leeds?
I decided to study this course because I found it can offer the opportunity to further my career by extending my skill set. Most of the modules in this course are very relevant to my previous study and my current work since I work as an inspector engineer in oil refinery. Additionally, I chose this course because I am looking to diversify my knowledge in materials science by studying some advanced subjects such as nano and functional materials which are involved in this course.
What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University so far and why?
The best part in my course is that it is well-organised since the materials module in the first semester cover the foundations of materials science and engineering making you able to continue your progress in any specialized subject you choose in the second semester. Also, most of the modules are supported by practical, case studies and group assignments which improve my research and team working skills. This is enhanced by the friendly and supportive atmosphere in the university, the staff are very helpful and you can find clear guidance in your learning at any point.
Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed.
The course involves individual and group projects that you will do throughout the course, for example I have done materials and processing selection project for blades, shift and nacelle of wind turbine, also I am part of group project to develop a wearable device that can detect and measure allergy components in the food using near-infrared spectroscopy.
What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?
I chose Leeds since it is quite big city that has a large student population and its people are used to internationals like me. It is easy to meet other international students from different cultures and you do not miss your local food, as there is a widespread of international restaurants and supermarkets. There is a variety of student accommodation and you can easily find one near the university. The city has a lot of beautiful places to visit such as parks, museums and shopping centres which are located not far from the university.
What are your ambitions for the future?
I am looking to apply the knowledge and skills that I have learnt in university in my profession. I think I have made great progress from the course which can provide the tools that I need in my career.
What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?
Actually, I planned to come here to improve my social and knowledge ability but did not imagine such improvement that I have made here throughout the course. Furthermore, this experience enables me to plan and manage my time for all my assessed work completing it in an appropriate manner and time.
What would you say to students coming to do the same course?
I think the time management is very essential so you should always plan your time to meet your deadline and have a chance to explore the beautiful city and UK. You should try to have a deep understanding in your course materials and think how they are related to real-life situations ‘to be in a position to change the world not just study it’.
